Teenager released from hospital

A local teenager who injured her head as she fell down the escalator at the Founders Memorial Library was treated and released from Kishwaukee Community Hospital Wednesday night.

The 17-year-old high school student was riding the first floor escalator to the basement with friends when the person in front of her tripped and knocked her forward, according to a University Police report.

Lt. Matthew Kiederlen said the accident was the result of “horseplay among friends.”

According to Kiederlen, the injured girl stated in the incident report that her fall was “an accident.”

Library officials refused to provide an incident report, but Stephen Wright, associate dean of public services for the library, said the accident was the first he had heard of on an escalator at the library.

Melanie Magara, assistant vice president for public affairs, said the girl injured her forehead on the stairs of the escalator.

“Within 15 to 20 seconds library staff were there to help her. They found a towel or cloth to stop the bleeding on her head, and she was treated and released that night, by my understanding,” Magara said.

The girl and her friends were not students at NIU, but were the only witnesses who saw the incident.
