Agency to support research in humanities
September 12, 1993
National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) stipends are definitely something to keep in mind for NIU graduate and undergraduate students keeping their eyes open for the future.
NEH is an independent federal agency that was established by Congress in 1965.
The NEH supports research, education and public projects in the humanities.
The term humanities includes, but is not limited to, subjects such as history, philosophy, languages, linguistics, literature, archaeology, jurisprudence, ethics, comparative religion and the history, theory and criticism of the arts.
Those eligible for an NEH summer stipend include senior and junior scholars, writers working in the humanities independently or at nonacademic institutions and faculty members at institutions with extensive Ph.D. programs in the humanities.
Also included are faculty members at two, four, and five-year colleges and universities.
Each summer stipend funds the recipient for their independent study for a period of two consecutive months. It is the responsibility of that individual to devote their efforts during that time to the approved area of study.
The amount awarded for a project is $4000 dollars. This figure does not include any travel expenses. Individuals with projects that require travel are awarded $4750 dollars.
Due to the political changes which have occurred in the past decade, projects focusing on the history and philosophy of democracy are encouraged.
The applicant must be a United States citizen, a U.S. National of American Samoa, or a foreign national who has been a resident in the U.S. or its territories for the past three years.
Recipients of a major fellowship or grant during the 1991-92 year are not eligible to apply.
Applicants teaching in colleges and universities must be nominated. Nominations are handled by their employing institution.
Applications must be postmarked no later than October 1, 1993. For further information, contact Linda Schwarz in the Graduate School.
