One of indie rock’s best kept-secrets
April 13, 2005
Weekender talked to ‘yeah’ man Kevin Robinson of Viva Voce – one of indie rock’s best-kept secrets – about “The O.C.,” Europe and the future. The band will play Sunday at 7th Street Space, 106 Seventh St.
Weekender: Viva Voce has been featured on shows like “The O.C.” and “One Tree Hill.” Do you watch those shows?
Kevin Robinson: No, absolutely not. The only time I watched it was when they said our songs were going to be on there. I mean, not to bite the hand that feeds you or whatever, but it’s just not my style of television.
WE: Did you approach them or did they seek you out?
KR: Yeah, they got the record and got in touch with us and asked if they could put some tunes on the show.
WE: Viva Voce is in the middle of a pretty intense tour and will soon be heading off to Europe. Where is that tour going to take you?
KR: We’re doing Austria, Belgium, Germany, France, UK and Scotland.
WE: Are you well received overseas?
KR: Yeah, we really are – I’m kind of surprised. But, I mean, I’ve heard all kinds of horror stories. Actually, right now, things are going kind of better for us over there than they are here in the states.
WE: Kind of like the Dandy Warhols?
KR: Yeah, for a lot of bands, it just kind of takes a while. The Pixies are probably the best example. I mean, they were huge in Europe, London and massive in their heyday. But no one really paid attention to them in the states until all the grunge bands started saying they were influenced by them.
WE: You sell kazoos with the band name. How did that come about?
KR: There is a song on the record that’s got kazoos kind of following the guitar track, like kind of Crosstown Traffic style. When we did the CD release party, we had a couple hundred Kazoos made up with the Viva Voce logo on there and gave them away free. We constructed a choir and taught them all the guitar part. It was really cool. We can’t afford to give them away anymore. We still have them at the show, but we have them for sale. It kind of looks like a Happy Meal toy with our name on it.
WE: Are you happy to be coming back to DeKalb?
KR: Yeah, it is fantastic. We’re really excited. There’s a handful of cities that just come out of left field that are a surprise, like wow, I wasn’t really expecting that. DeKalb was one of them. Everything down to the little flyers was really cool. I’m hoping this show is really cool as well.
WE: Is there anything new we should be expecting?
KR: A lot of new songs that we didn’t perform last time. This is a funky, sexier set.
WE: Have you had time to produce some new stuff while on tour?
KR: Yes and no. I mean, we’ve got a bunch of new ideas, but we haven’t had time to flesh them out. It’s kind of an ordeal to switch between recording and live mode. To do either one requires a lot of time. When this European tour is over, we’re going to start recording again, we’re looking forward to it.
WE: Anything else we should be expecting from you in the future?
KR: Yeah, we have a new video for “Center of the Universe” they pitched to me a couple weeks ago. That comes out in a little bit and some more European vinyl and little things here and there. I’ve got a hip hop album that I did and emceed and produced, its coming out this summer. So just a lot of little bits and pieces until the next Viva record comes out.
