Theatre showcases community

The elegant classical program, performed for the community by the community, drew a crowd of 300 to 400 people at the theater, 135 N. 2nd Street.

Every performer represented the community, said John Smith, director and producer of “Just Make it Happen” entertainment.

The Northern Illinois Children’s Chorus represented the children, State Sen. Brad Burzynski (R-Sycamore) represented the government and school board member Andy Small represented the schools.

Small, Burzynski and Greg Anderson performed as the tuxedo-clad “Gentlemen of Note,” along with the previously featured Cecelia Kafer, Nancy Killeen and Barb McCaskey as the “Sophisticated Ladies of Song.”

The singers, who performed solos and duets, belted out classical melodies such as “Moonglow,” “Luck be a Lady” and “Prisoner of Love” paying tribute to old-time greats such as Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller and the Andrews Sisters.

The singers, along with the 16-member Shananigans band and dancers Tori Brantley and Bret Hamilton, made the evening a complete package.

The event raised between $4,000 and $5,000 from ticket sales and the raffle, Smith said. The money raised for the Egyptian’s building fund will be used for better seats and facilities.

For some of the attendees, supporting the Egyptian Theatre was more than just supporting the community.

“This is where my husband and I started our courting days,” said Shabbona resident Phyllis Barshinger.

For others, it was a night to transport them back in time and enjoy classics.

“They’re mellow, they’re wonderful,” said DeKalb resident Janan Rieff. “It’s part of a culture that’s needed in DeKalb – fine arts.”
