Unwatched candle causes fire, $90,000 in damage
April 25, 2005
An unwatched candle on a kitchen table resulted in a fire that quickly engulfed a DeKalb home Sunday afternoon.
The fire at the two-story home at 1106 N. 13th St. occurred at about 1 p.m. Sunday and resulted in $90,000 of damage, according to a DeKalb Fire Department press release.
Firefighters who responded to the scene found fire and smoke coming from first-floor windows. They brought the fire under control 20 minutes after arrival.
Sycamore and Cortland firefighters also provided assistance.
No other buildings were damaged in the fire, DeKalb Fire Chief Lanny Russell said.
Russell said unwatched candles were a common cause behind fires.
The building’s occupants had stepped outside for a few minutes when they heard the smoke detector go off, Russell said.
By the time the fire department arrived, the kitchen was engulfed and significant heat and smoke damage had been done throughout the structure, Russell said.
One of the residents was transported to the hospital after becoming upset, Russell said.
Russell said the fire was brought under control quickly because of the firefighters’ swift response and hard training.
“They just did a good job of this, which is what we expect them to do every time,” Russell said.
