Softball tries to cure field woes
April 4, 2005
Despite committing four errors in Sunday’s loss to Bowling Green, NIU softball coach Donna Martin is confident her team will come around defensively.
The Huskies (16-11) will get theirs when they take Mary Bell field for a double-header with Valparaiso at 3 p.m. today.
The Huskies committed seven errors in three games this weekend, but Martin said her team is still getting accustomed to its home field.
“I think defensively it’s just a matter of getting used to the field,” Martin said. “We will just pay extra attention in warm-ups and in preparation.”
The Crusaders (1-22) are coming off their first win of the season over Western Illinois, but Martin said the Huskies won’t take them lightly.
“They may have only won one game, but they have played some good competition,” Martin said. “We just need to take care of ourselves and not be concerned with the competition.”
Martin said she has not set her pitching rotation for the week, but all four of her pitchers will likely see action.
Martin added that she would like to continue to see low scoring games.
The Huskies are 6-4 this season in one-run games.
“Close games were a point of emphasis coming into this season,” Martin said. “We lost a lot of 1 and 2 run games last season, and we want to win more of them than we lose.”
