Greek Row Task Force looks at options to improve neighborhood
April 14, 2005
The Greek Row Task Force discussed plans to assess the safety of the housing exteriors and landscape of Greek Row.
As part of improving safety along the area, the task force discussed implementing the Safety Through Environmental Design, said Sue Guio, DeKalb community services planner.
The program will include surveying Greek houses to spot potential safety hazards the houses may have, Guio said.
“Asking a house to remove large bushes next to doors that people can hide behind would be one example of a safety hazard,” Guio said.
The task force also reviewed the original 2002 survey results of Greek Row’s economic and safety issues and compared them to the Greek Row of today, Guio said.
“We’re looking to see if we need to do another survey,” Guio said.
Other items on the agenda included a traffic sign put up at Blackhawk Road and Ridge Drive to inform drivers that cross traffic does not stop.
“We had received reports of a few close calls at that intersection,” Guio said.
The economic activity of the area was briefly discussed as there was nothing new to report, Guio said.
The task force also discussed two grocery stores that could be located at the corner of Annie Glidden and Dresser roads and at Anne Glidden Road and Taylor Street, Guio said.
The Greek Row Task Force will not meet again until the fall when school resumes, Guio said.
