Freshmen create room with bite
March 3, 2005
From the signs on the door to the patio bar turned desk, anyone can tell that 528 Grant South Tower B is a bachelor pad run amok.
“Neither of us brought anything to decorate with when we moved in,” said Patrick Weaver, a freshman business administration major.
Since that fateful move-in back in January, Weaver and Mike Kosydor, a freshman mechanical engineering major, have made it their mission to keep their room under constant renovation. At one point, they even lofted Weaver’s bed to make room for a La-Z-Boy and couch, but they had to get rid of the La-Z-Boy and couch when the bar moved in.
Kosydor said room components are frequently discarded in the name of change.
“We try and do a project every week,” Kosydor said. “[It] keeps us out of trouble. This week was supposed to be a waterfall, but we’re both broke.”
In its current formation, the duo has not only installed a patio bar over Weaver’s desk but also built a shelving unit into the window alcove. There, they house their refrigerator, one of two televisions, a drink dispenser and a fish tank.
“We actually went out and got the fish tank the third week we were here,” Kosydor said. “We wanted a snake, but the only pets you can have are fish.”
Weaver and Kosydor couldn’t just settle for any old Nemo wannabe. Instead, they stock their tank with baby sharks, although their intelligence isn’t nearly as sharp as their teeth.
“Our [current] shark knocks itself out a lot,” Weaver said. “He swims around real fast and hits his head on the glass, knocks himself out for a minute.”
The bar was an impulse buy.
“We walked into Lowe’s to get a wheel for a desk and walked out with a $250 bar,” Weaver said. “It’s like a pool patio bar for indoors or out.”
Kosydor said it was a riskier purchase than one might think.
“We didn’t even know if it would fit,” Kosydor said.
The room is full of the guys’ sense of humor. One of the first things they did was remove the mirror from the door to put up a dart board. After pondering what to do with the displaced mirror, they decided the only logical thing to do was place it on the ceiling above Kosydor’s bed.
“Nothing but class when you walk into this room,” Weaver said.
