Gymnastics goes 2-1

Kristina Campos won her fourth all-around title in as many meets as the NIU gymnastics team finished 2-1 over the weekend.

In the weekend, opener the Huskies beat Ball State University 193.150-191.975.

The Huskies (6-7 overall, 2-2 MAC) then split a triangular meet at University of Illinois (15-4) on Sunday, losing to the host Illini and beating the Japan All-Stars.

The first place all-around finishes give Campos five titles on the season. Teammate Ashlee Williams finished second in both meets. The Huskies’ only other all-around title was won by Williams on Jan. 9 against UIC.

“We couldn’t miss,” NIU coach Mark Sontag said. “It just seemed like whatever we tried we couldn’t do wrong.”

NIU finished its first three rotations with three of the top five finishes en route to their victory over BSU (3-14, 2-4). Williams and Campos won the uneven bars and the balance beam, respectively.

“I must say the most surprising thing was the balance beam,” Sontag said. “Not only did we win the event, but it was our highest score of meet. It’s good to see the practice is paying off when we need it to.”

Campos’ win was the Huskies only individual event title in the triangular. NIU had second place finishes from sophomore Amy Ristvedt in the vault and Williams on the uneven bars.

“The Illini had the type of meet we had on Friday,” Sontag said. “We know we can do better the next time we see them at the State Classic on the 19th.”
