Suspects in shooting captured
March 21, 2005
DeKalb police arrested two Chicago men Wednesday for roles in a DeKalb shooting that day.
Police responded at 1:33 a.m. to a report of a man who was shot in the parking lot of University Village, 847 Russell Road.
DeKalb Police Sgt. Gary Spangler said the victim, William Green, 30, of Downers Grove, was shot twice in the lower body and once in the upper body with a handgun.
Police charged Marcus J. Marshall, 20, with attempted armed robbery and aggravated battery with a firearm. Charles Hood III, 20, was charged with aggravated battery.
Spangler said an incident at a local convenience store that occurred before the shooting helped track down the suspects.
One of the suspects confronted another person about money he was owed, during which he displayed a handgun, Spangler said.
The suspects left without incident after which a complainant called police with the suspect’s name and descriptions that matched witness accounts of the suspects at the shooting.
Police said the pair was apprehended in a vehicle later that day on Ruby Lane.
Green was taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital, 626 Bethany Road.
Green was recuperating well and was scheduled to be released Friday or Saturday, Spangler said.
The motive appears to have been robbery, Spangler said.
Neither of the suspects are NIU students, he said.
Aggravated battery with a firearm is a Class X felony punishable by six to 30 years in prison and a fine of $25,000.
Attempted armed robbery is a Class 1 felony punishable by four to 15 years in prison and a fine of $25,000. Aggravated battery is a Class 3 felony punishable by two to five years in prison and a $25,000 fine.
Illinois State and DeKalb County Sheriff’s police assisted in the investigation.
