Pair try to rob man at gunpoint Friday

DeKalb police are searching for two men who attempted to rob a man at gunpoint while he was at his car Friday morning.

Police said the pair approached the man in a parking lot in the 1100 block of Ridge Drive at 12:18 a.m. One of the suspects displayed a handgun. The pair also tried to steal the man’s car.

The victim, who was getting a CD out of his car, proved a poor target.

“Basically, he didn’t have anything on them that they wanted,” DeKalb Police Lt. Jim Kayes said.

Kayes said the two suspects then ran off. The victim was not injured and nothing was taken.

Police describe the suspects as two black males. One was 6-feet, 180 pounds, wearing a black coat and black pants. The second suspect is described as 5 feet, 10 inches tall, 160 pounds and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. Both men were wearing ski masks.

Kayes said the attempt was atypical for the area.

“We had a string of strong-arms on West Ridge a couple of years ago but that’s kind of cooled off,” Kayes said.

The suspects may face a variety of charges if captured.

DeKalb police Sgt. Jason Leverton said the suspects may be charged with attempted armed robbery, armed robbery, aggravated assault or armed violence charges.

Armed robbery is a Class X felony punishable by 15 to 30 years in prison. Aggravated assault is a Class A misdemeanor. Armed violence can carry punishments from 15 to 40 years in prison depending upon the type of violation.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the DeKalb Police Department at 748-8400 or Crime Stoppers at 895-3272.
