Students’ money down the tube with magazine

It was a waste of money when it was being published. Now, Huskie Highlights won’t be seen for the rest of the semester.

After two issues were published under her direction, Katrina Corcoran wrote a letter of resignation as editor in chief of the magazine March 16. In Wednesday’s Northern Star, Student Association President Craig Marcus said no more issues would be published this semester because of personnel issues.

Luckily, the two other staff members, copy editor Brooke Robinson and staff writer Gino Betts, will spend the rest of the semester earning their salaries by researching how other magazines have set up online editions. The SA has expressed that an online version of the magazine is a possible direction for Huskie Highlights.

Corcoran’s semi-monthly salary of $366.23 for a 20-hour work week will go toward offsetting magazine costs such as printing throughout the semester.

Printing? Isn’t that what the student fees were supposed to pay for? Why, when the magazine took more than $30,000 in student fees, would it need to offset costs?

Since the fall, five issues of Huskie Highlights have been printed. The SA owes NIU at least one, if not two, more issues of Huskie Highlights this year. Since they aren’t publishing, they are saving at least $6,000 in printing costs. Where is that money going?

From the beginning, the SA has done nothing but fritter away students’ money to a pointless magazine. Thousands of dollars that could have gone to student organizations has been flushed down the toilet.

Although this year’s budget was cut down to about $20,000, it is still too much. For a publication that has been struggling for well over a year, it’s not worth it. It never was from the beginning, and the new leadership in the SA needs to do something about it.
