Mathey wants wins

There are a few things NIU baseball coach Ed Mathey hopes to see from his team in this weekend’s Ace’s Diamond Classic at Evansville, Ind.

Mathey hopes to build on the momentum from the Huskies’ first win this season, over Southern Illinois University on Sunday, but also wants to erase some of the mistakes that caused them to lose two of their three games at SIU.

NIU won the third game of the set, led by Brian Smith, who pitched a no-hitter until the eighth inning, finishing with a 9-3 complete game win.

Smith was named MAC Player of the Week Tuesday.

“I’d like to say there were fewer fielding mistakes in that game, but there weren’t,” Mathey said. “We just had a great offense and an exceptional hitting performance.”

The Huskies will travel to the University of Evanston for a doubleheader against Wright State University at 10 a.m. and Austin Peay State University at 1 p.m. The Huskies will face Evanston at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Wright State (3-9) will be the only team without a winning record the Huskies have played this season.

“That’s one of the great things about our schedule,” Mathey said. “We want to play good teams. Wright State hasn’t done that well, but they are dangerous.”

Austin Peay (7-4) will be the Huskies’ second foe on Saturday, led in hitting by Luther Brett, who in 11 games has managed a .455 average.

Evanston (12-4) has won all seven of the games it has played this season.

Mathey wasn’t worried about his team’s offense but still maintained that he wanted to eliminate mental mistakes. NIU out-hit SIU 37-29 in last weekend’s three-game set.

“We’ve swung the bats pretty well, but at times we haven’t come through with that big hit after two outs,” Mathey said.
