Women travel to Toledo for 1st round
March 4, 2005
You won’t hear any complaining from the NIU women’s basketball team about its first-round pairing at Toledo.
The No. 11 seed Huskies have played No. 6 Toledo twice this season, and will again meet in their first-round matchup of the MAC tournament at 12 p.m. Saturday.
If the Huskies defeat Toledo they will face No. 3 seed Marshall, which has a first-round bye. The game would take place Wednesday at the Gund Arena in Cleveland.
NIU split its two meetings this season with the Rockets. NIU beat Toledo on the road, one of its three MAC wins away from the Convocation Center.
On Jan. 22 the Huskies (7-20 overall, 4-12 MAC) went to Toledo and beat the Rockets 63-60.
The Rockets’ (13-14, 9-7) second-leading scorer Karin Hoogendam left the game just two minutes in after she took an elbow to the face and didn’t return.
“A lot of people said that the only reason we won is because they lost Hoogendam,” NIU guard Stephanie Raymond said. “But I think if we play like we played against Bowling Green we can beat anyone.”
In the second matchup of the season, Toledo avenged its earlier loss with a 64-55 win Feb. 16 in DeKalb.
“It’s been a long time since we played them, but I think we match up very well,” NIU forward Jamie Wilson said. “Our main goal is to get to Cleveland, though.”
The Huskies enter Saturday’s contest losers of 12 of their last 14, while Toledo has won seven of 12.
Raymond leads NIU with 15.2 points per game, and Toledo is led by Danielle Bishop at 13.8.
“Toledo is a tough place to play,” NIU coach Carol Hammerle said. “We beat them once on their court, so I really like the odds.”
