NIU ends regular season with OT loss
March 3, 2005
In any overtime game, coaches look back at possessions their team didn’t convert into points.
The winning coach gets to look back at the turnovers and missed shots and breathe a sigh of relief. The losing coach can only sigh.
NIU men’s basketball coach Rob Judson did the latter Wednesday after his team fell 81-75 on Senior Night at the Convocation Center against conference rival Toledo.
NIU’s Anthony Maestranzi sent the game into the extra period with two free throws, but NIU (11-16 overall, 7-11 MAC) couldn’t overcome its foul trouble and depleted bench to get the victory.
“That was tough at the end,” Maestranzi said. “We had Todd [Peterson] and Cory [Sims] foul out. And I mean I know we were a little bit tired, but we weren’t thinking about it.”
Though the game had no bearing on the final seedings for the MAC tournament, NIU still looked to extend its home winning streak to seven.
Sammy Villegas had other plans for Toledo (15-12, 10-7). The junior came off the bench to score 23 points, including four early three-pointers to help his team to a 22-point lead in the first half.
“We knew coming in Toledo was an explosive team,” Judson said. “And we knew Villegas could be streaky, but he was on tonight. But the big thing about that start was the turnovers.”
NIU had 10 turnovers in the first half, which helped Toledo’s early run. But after Villegas’ last three-pointer, the Huskies buckled down.
NIU’s Mike McKinney had 10 of his 15 points in a 17-0 NIU run that closed out the first half.
Coming out of halftime, Peterson tied the game at 35 with a four-point play after being fouled on a made three-pointer. From then on there were 10 lead changes in the second half.
In overtime, the Rockets’ Keonta Howell had five quick points and NIU was outscored 11-5.
Peterson led five NIU players in scoring with 19 points – 12 of which came in the second half.
Toledo’s Florentino Valencia, a Chicago native, and Howell finished with 19 and 16 points, respectively.
NIU is already locked into the 10th seed in the MAC tournament and will travel to either Buffalo, Kent State, Bowling Green, Ball State or Toledo on Monday.
