Site of new mural selected

Main Street DeKalb Inc. has selected the wall that will become the location for another mural project in downtown DeKalb.

The east wall of North Central Cyclery, 534 E. Lincoln Highway, is the top pick for the first of four murals, said Jennifer Groce, executive director of Main Street DeKalb.

North Central Cyclery became involved with the mural project through DeKalb’s Architectural Improvement Project, co-owner Tobie DePauw said.

DePauw and his associate have not had a chance to sit down and discuss the mural, he said.

This mural would be the first of four to be put up during the next few years, Groce said.

North Central Cyclery has been at the same location for 70 years, Depauw said.

“It’s an ideal place in DeKalb for a mural. But it’s also important that the community knows we’re here under new ownership and new management,” DePauw said.

DePauw said he is pleased with downtown DeKalb’s economy and atmosphere.

“We try to bring more people in not only for our business, but for everyone’s businesses,” DePauw said.

The themes for each mural have been chosen but are not set in stone, Groce said. The first mural theme will reflect DeKalb as a “communiversity.”

Themes for later murals will center around DeKalb’s 150th birthday, transportation and recreation, Groce said.

“There are a lot of parties involved in developing this project and making it happen,” Groce said.
