University chorus, band to perform joint concert

The University Chorus and University Band are performing in an ensemble concert at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Music Building Concert Hall.

Generally 250 to 350 people have attended these concerts in the past, said Lynn Slater, coordinator of admissions and public relations for the music department.

About 80 percent of the members of both the chorus and band are non-music majors; anyone can join. Saturday’s performance is one of two given each semester.

“We have more non-music majors participating because these organizations are less time-consuming,” Slater said.

The conductors for the evening will be University Band director Margarite Ortega and music graduate student Matthew Erpelding. The chorus will perform first with three separate selections, “Turn the World Around,” “From Where the Sun Now Stands” and “Ain’t Got Time to Die.” They will be followed by an intermission and the band.

The band will be performing literature of various religions. The music played will depict Jewish, Christian, Native American and Pagan worship.

“We’ll be playing music with a range from quiet and serene to loud and rackety,” Ortega said. “There are a number of soloists throughout the program, as well as some small surprises.”

Throughout the night, the honorary band fraternity, Kappa Kappa Psi, will be selling baked goods to the audience.

Admission to the event is free and open for all to attend.
