“Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow”

By Richard Pulfer

An amazing adventure told with state of the art special effects, “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” serves up an healthy dose of action, humor and wonder.

Shot almost entirely in front of a blue screen, the movie depicts a vintage comic book advneture told in the tradition of pulp serials from the 1940s.

Through the DVD commentary of the creators, the production never loses a sense of modesty. Still, there is plenty of wonder in the World of Tomorrow, especially during the commentary, when the exten of CGI is used in every shot. The movie takes on an amazing feel, when the director reveals how practical items such as chairs and carpet are digitally implemented into picture. “Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow” is nostalgic fun, but the story of its growth from one man’s garage project to a breakthrough in special effects is an inspiring story for a person with a pipe dream.
