Falcons hold on for victory

Despite taking first place in three of the four individual events, the NIU gymnastics team fell to Bowling Green on Sunday at the Convocation Center.

For the second week straight, the Huskies (2-2 overall, 1-1 MAC) were unable to come away with the win.

Bowling Green (2-4, 2-3) claimed a 192.075-191.325 victory over the Huskies as Bowling Green senior Kristin DiPietro took the all-around title.

The first event for the Huskies was the vault, where NIU sophomore Kelly Kramer took first place with a 9.8.

NIU jumped to an early lead after the first rotation 48.375-48.050. Bowling Green competed on the uneven bars in the first quarter of the meet.

“Kelly did a really good job, she was nice and aggressive,” NIU coach Mark Sontag said. “We worked on a couple of things she wanted to improve and it showed.”

The second rotation saw the Huskies’ turn on the uneven bars. Junior Ashlee Williams led the NIU effort with a score of 9.75, once again claiming the overall high score on the uneven bars.

The Huskies had one minor setback on the bars when freshman Jody Yednock missed her landing on the dismount for a score of 9.25, which dropped her to 11th overall.

Despite Yednock’s stumble, NIU was still able to increase its lead a tenth of a point. The Huskies retained the lead 96.700-96.275 after the halfway mark, receiving a score of 48.325 on the uneven bars.

It was at this time that Kristina Campos’ calf tightened up-an incident that would affect the rest of the meet.

“Kristina’s calf tightened up and we had to water down her vault then eventually replace her on floor,” Sontag said.

NIU’s balance beam set was the meets third rotation. Freshman Jennifer Rice scored the Huskies best at 9.550 placing her fourth overall.

After a couple of crucial falls during its routine, NIU had multiple scores under a 9.0 including a 8.325 by Williams. Bowling Green capitalized during its floor exercise, taking the lead from the Huskies 144.7-143.425.

It was a lead Bowling Green would not relinquish.

“Once the game shifted after the second event,” Sontag said. “Everyone got a little cautious and we didn’t really go for it like we needed to. You can’t do that.”

Heading into the final event of the competition the Huskies floor exercise was unable to make up the gap the balance beam left. Kramer took the top NIU score for the second time. Her 9.8 was good for first overall, but the team was only able to get a 47.900.
