One dead, one hurt in Genoa break-in
February 7, 2005
One man is dead and another critically injured following a home invasion Friday night in Genoa.
Two men forced their way into a home at 702 John Court about 10:20 p.m. and confronted the homeowner with a nine-shot .22-caliber revolver.
The homeowner wrestled the weapon away and then shot one man in the head and the other in the abdomen, according to a Genoa Police Department press release.
Police found Michael T. Kappa, 30, of Schaumburg, lying on the floor of the home with a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken by ambulance from the scene but died from his injuries early Saturday morning, Genoa police said
The second individual, a 34-year-old Schaumburg man, left the scene in a vehicle, which was later found at a McDonald’s near the intersection of Illinois routes 23 and 72 after he called for an ambulance on his cell phone. According to published reports, the man was in critical condition Saturday at Kishwaukee Community Hospital.
Police said no charges are expected to be filed against the homeowner regarding the shooting. However, the shooting is under investigation by the DeKalb County Major Crime Task Force.
A routine check of the crime scene uncovered over 100 pounds of cannabis and $17,000 in cash. The finding has been turned over to the North Central Narcotics Task Force for an investigation.
Genoa police were unavailable for further comment as of press time.
