Junior point guard dishes out answers
February 10, 2005
In his second year as a starter, Anthony Maestranzi is becoming a veteran on the NIU men’s basketball team.
The junior point guard had a team-high 16 points and five assists in his team’s 65-46 win Wednesday night over visiting Central Michigan.
With an ashed-up forehead and sweat beading down his face, Maestranzi took time to talk to the Northern Star.
Northern Star: Noticing the ashes on your head, did you remember not to eat meat today?
Anthony Maestranzi: Actually, I didn’t. I ate a little bit this morning then I remembered. I messed that up.
NS: Did you go out to church with anyone on the team?
AM: Just with Todd [Peterson]. It was right before the game so it kind of felt good coming right before the game. It was different.
NS: All MAC teams are doing especially well at home this season. What’s the secret?
AM: A lot of schools in the MAC get a lot of support and it’s tough to play there. There’s some good crowds. I just think we have a real good conference and it’s tough to play on the road.
NS: You played with Dee Brown during the summer while you were in high school. What would happen if you guys played the University of Illinois?
AM: It would be a lot of fun for us to play. I don’t know what the outcome would be though. I’d just love to play against Dee.
NS: Are they going to win it this year?
AM: I think they’ve got a good shot. I think they are going to go undefeated throughout the regular season, but I don’t know if they’ll win it.
