Records, NIU fall

By Ian Waddick

NIU’s Lindsay Chamberlain and Alicja Czajka broke a pair of NIU records, but the women’s track team finished fifth of five teams Sunday at the Chippewa Invitational.

The Huskies finished with a 95, well behind host and champion Central Michigan, who finished with a 256.

Chamberlain’s weight throw of 57-feet-3.5 inches broke teammate Ashley Morrow’s record of 56-8.75 set Jan 22.

Czajka set her sixth record, running a 1,000 meter run in 3:00.01 to finish fourth at the meet. The old mark of 3:15.90 held by Christie Mielock stood for more than 24 years.

Women breeze to win

The NIU women’s tennis team didn’t drop a set as it cruised to a 7-0 non-conference win Saturday over Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

NIU’s Daniela Martinez won the only perfect match of the meet. The Huskies senior didn’t lose a game when she defeated Erin Felber 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

The Huskies No. 3 doubles team of Dora Delgadillo and Megan Brooks swept UW’s tandem of Carrie Salo and Alissa Matzinger 8-0.

Sweep nearly duplicated

On Sunday the NIU men’s tennis team nearly duplicated the perfection of the women’s team when it beat Eastern Illinois 6-1 in Rockford.

Barcelona, Spain, native Willy Gali picked up another win – No. 1 singles for the Huskies when he defeated Charles LeVaque 6-4, 7-5.

Gali’s teammate at No. 1 doubles, Alex Firesen, was victorious alone at No. 4 singles. Alex Firesen made quick work of Ryan Blankenbaker in a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
