Speed limits may be lowered
February 25, 2005
The DeKalb City Council will vote to pass an ordinance for the adoption of the “DeKalb 3D” 2005 comprehensive plan update at its next regular meeting.
The plan commission has been working on revising the plan for long-term community development goals and strategies since 2002.
The council will also look at amending the speed limit on Annie Glidden Road from Varsity Boulevard to Hillcrest Drive. The limit currently is 35 mph. The proposed change would lower it to 30 mph.
This will not create a speed trap because there is plenty of transitional road to slow down, city engineer Joel Maurer said.
A traffic study conducted by the city’s engineering department showed the reduction would bring more safety and enhance driver awareness.
The approval of a bid for the Challenger Drive to Enterprise Avenue water main extension will also be under consideration by the council.
The industrial subdivision is finding it hard to develop because of insufficient water flow for fire safety, City Manager Mark Biernacki said.
The extension of the proper water flow will open up the land for industrial purposes and expansion, Biernacki said.
The lowest bid, provided by Stenstrom Excavation and Blacktop Group, of Rockford, was substantially below the estimated cost.
The next city council meeting will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 at the DeKalb Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St.
