Army veterans win other big football game on Sunday

Super Bowl weekend was host to more than one big game. The annual Toilet Bowl between branches of the Armed Forces took place at Huskie Stadium.

The game, which took place on the east side of Huskie Stadium at 2 p.m., traditionally matches Army and Air Force veterans against Navy and Marines veterans. This year, however, the Army faced all other military branches and won 21-14.

“We’ve been playing it annually since 1969,” said Jenny Webster, president of NIU’s Veteran’s Club. “Somebody thought it would be a fun idea to play football on Super Bowl Sunday.”

The final score is written on a toilet seat-trophy that has been around since the first game, although this year the group had to start keeping score on a new toilet seat because the old one finally ran out of room.

The game is open to men and women, though last year Webster was the only woman who played. This year, 10 players participated, among them eight men and two women.

“I’m kind of used to being the only girl,” Webster said. “There haven’t been a lot of women in the club until recently. The last couple of semesters more women have been joining the club.”

Although the game is hosted by the Veteran’s Club, it is open to students, alumni and anyone in the community who is currently serving or has served in the Armed Forces. Players, however, must be over 18. Non-military persons can also play as long as there are even teams.

“The only prize is basically bragging rights for your branch of service,” Webster said.

The game is more for fun and doesn’t adhere to strict rules.

“We really decide how we’re going to do it the day of the game when we see if we have even teams among the branches,” Webster said. “People come and cheer us on and then we go watch the Super Bowl.”

Sunday’s game was overcast and the field was extremely muddy, but the players didn’t seem to mind.

“The guys wouldn’t throw me the ball, but when they did I scored a touchdown,” said junior electrical engineering major Megan Elliott.
