Family offers free room to returning Iraq Veterans
February 2, 2005
A DeKalb family is providing a rent-free room in its home to help a military serviceperson returning from the Iraq War.
Eligibility for the room will be based on if the person has participated in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom, said Jenny Webster, president of the NIU Veterans Club.
“I’m surprised more people haven’t expressed interest,” Webster said, “The offer has been available for about a month.”
The family also requires the person to be currently enrolled at NIU, she said.
“Even if the person has only been at NIU for one semester, that doesn’t mean that they are not eligible.”
The eligible veteran could possibly live in the family’s home indefinitely.
The family wants to see how things go the first semester after the veteran moves in, Webster said. If the veteran is in good standing, the family will allow the veteran to stay as long as he or she needs to.
“The person could possibly not have to pay any rent until they graduate,” she said.
The family refused to comment until it decides on who they are going to choose to live in its home.
