Restaurants run food drive

Shot by Cupid’s arrow? Soothe the wound at any of DeKalb’s dining destinations this Valentine’s Day.

A number of DeKalb restaurants are offering Valentine’s Day promotions to benefit Safe Passage, said Kim Kubiak, executive director of the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce.

Kubiak said the restaurants include O’Leary’s Irish Pub & Grill, 260 E. Lincoln Highway; Lincoln Inn Restaurant, 240 E. Lincoln Highway; Rosita’s Mexican Restaurant, 642 E. Lincoln Highway; Sullivan’s Tavern, 722 E. Lincoln Highway; Eduardo’s Mexican Restaurant, 214 E. Lincoln Highway; and Mondo Diana’s, 122 E. Lincoln Highway.

Each establishment is encouraging customers to bring in non-perishable food items in exchange for a sheet of coupons redeemable at participating restaurants, Kubiak said.

Some DeKalb restaurants expect a good turnout for the holiday.

“We’re filled,” said Mondo Diana’s manager Marvin Hill. “Most of the folks that we have are couples.”

The restaurant may have a few tables available between 7 and 8 p.m., Hill said.

Mondo Diana’s specializes in seafood and northern Italian cuisine, Hill said.

Hill said couples with reservations can arrange for roses at their table courtesy of Glidden Campus Florist.

Today is the first Valentine’s Day for O’Leary’s since its June opening, manager Trevor Turner said.

As of Sunday, O’Leary’s had about 15 to 20 reservations for Valentine’s Day, Turner said.

O’Leary’s is offering a steak and lobster special to include chocolate-covered strawberries, Turner said.

Rosita’s has a special place in the hearts of some customers, manager Jennifer Herrmann said.

“We were a lot of people’s first dates,” she said.

Rosita’s has had at least one couple each of the last four years get engaged at the restaurant on Valentine’s Day, Herrmann said.

Even restaurants not open for dinner expect extra business because of the holiday.

Lincoln Inn Restaurant, a participant in the Safe Passage food drive, is open for breakfast and lunch, owner Bill McMahon said.

“I think we’ll see some extra [business] but I don’t think they’ll be beating down our door,” McMahon said.

Although restaurant destinations are traditional for couples on Valentine’s Day, Molly’s Eatery and Drinkery, 1022 W. Lincoln Highway, usually sponsors a singles party.

Molly’s caters to singles and couples, manager Derek Nayden said, but this year will be no exception to the singles party.
