Sorority Rush to move to later date
August 18, 1993
The procedures of Sorority Rush will be changed somewhat this year in an attempt to better accommodate students, however the main focus will remain the same.
Rush will take place after the start of classes this year rather than during the week before school starts. The dates will be Sept. 11-12 and Sept. 18-19.
Dawn Sturma, activities advisor for Greek Affairs, said the change in dates should make it easier for women who are moving into the residence halls. She also said she hopes the later date will allow for more publicity, and therefore increase the number of women participating.
The other main change this year will be a lack of outside entertainment. Sturma said this should simplify the Rush process. She said she also thinks it will allow for more time for chapter members and rushees to get to know one another.
The purpose of sorority Rush is to allow rushees to get the best perspective of Greek life at NIU. The Panhellenic Council describes sorority life as incorporating academics and service with social activities and lifelong friendships.
The Rush process begins with a mandatory informational meeting at 8 p.m. on Sept. 8 in the Carl Sandburg Auditorium of the Holmes Student Center. At that time, girls can register and all procedures will be explained.
The schedule for Rush is as follows:
^‘2:30-9:50 p.m., Sept. 11, nine Open Parties
^’3-9:05 p.m., Sept. 12, six Panorama Parties
^‘1-6 p.m., Sept. 18, four R.S.V.P. Parties
^’10:40 a.m.—2:20 p.m., Sept. 19, two Formal Parties
The nine sororities participating in Formal Rush are Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Phi, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Delta Gamma, Delta Phi Epsilon, Delta Zeta, Sigma Kappa and Sigma Sigma Sigma. Phi Beta Chi and Zeta Sigma Chi will be holding Informal Rush.
The change in Rush dates should make it easier for those moving into the residence halls.
