Huskies head to No. 15 MSU

After starting its first two meets of the year at the Convocation Center, the NIU gymnastics squad (2-0) heads to East Lansing, Mich. for its first road test of the year against No. 15 Michigan State.

“This will be more like the meets we’ll see for the postseason and what the MAC championship competition will look like,” coach Mark Sontag said. “It’s always beneficial to play a good team and see how your squad will step up to the occasion.”

Michigan State (6-1) has been ranked as high as No. 6 this season, holding victories over No. 8 Louisiana State and No. 23 Missouri. Its only loss came at the hands of No. 21 Arizona.

“As long as we hit 24 routines or four sets anything can happen,” Sontag said. “So far we’ve hit three out of four in our first two meets.”

The Huskies have defeated UIC and Eastern Michigan.

“We’re 2-0 to start out the season and the whole team is confident we can reach what we set out to do,” NIU senior Kristina Campos said.

The big positive for NIU will be Ashlee Williams, who will compete in every event. After a week of light workouts, her minor sprains are healed.
