City council tackles maintenance

By Amanda Gruenwald

Residents can expect changes in city departments if the city council approves staff recommendations at their next regular meeting.

City staff is proposing the creation of a Property Maintenance Division within the Community Development Department.

Staff presented city council with a plan to enhance the city’s property maintenance through stronger code enforcement.

The council agreed with the recommendations and instructed the staff to begin implementation.

The council will also consider a Community Development Block Grant Action Plan for 2005.

This year $70,590 will be used for Public Service Funding through the grant plan. In 2004, $3,510 more was available for public service.

It is recommended that all agencies receive the same amount of funding as last year.

The council will also discuss the building of six corporate condo hangars at DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport.

Three renters have already expressed interest in the condos, Airport Manager Tom Cleveland said. The condos would be rented in five-year terms with revenues for the land lease at $4,320.

A proposal for the city to build more T-Hangars at the airport will also be presented. The 40 hangars at the airport are full and there is a 25- person waiting list for hangar space.

City Manager Mark Biernacki said that additions would generate field sales and other activities that would produce revenue for the airport.

The council’s next meeting will be Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. at the DeKalb Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St.
