Fatigue catches up to women’s hoops in 2nd overtime
January 31, 2005
Foul trouble and fatigue finally caught up with the NIU women’s basketball team in the second overtime Saturday at Central Michigan.
The Huskies, who trailed by as many as 10 in the first half, fought back to force two overtimes, but came up short in the 64-58 loss.
Central Michigan converted 6-of-8 free throws in the second overtime and shot 27 for the game compared to the Huskies eight.
“I’m not blaming anything on the officiating, but it’s tough when one team shoots 27 [free throws] and one shoots eight,” NIU coach Carol Hammerle said. “That’s just part of playing on the road.”
Trailing by three with one minute left in regulation, NIU guard Stephanie Raymond hit a three pointer to tie the game at 42.
Junior guard Keishonda Williamson then blocked a last second CMU shot to send the game to its first overtime.
The Chippewas went on a 7-2 run to start the second overtime and put the Huskies away for good.
“We just weren’t able to hit our shots when we needed to,” said Raymond, who had a team-high 18 points in 50 minutes. “We weren’t tired, but we only played solid for 40 minutes.”
All five Huskies starters played at least 39 minutes and the bench contributed just four points.
“It’s a very disappointing loss,” Hammerle said. “We just couldn’t seem to buy a basket in that second overtime.”
