Rematch for the title
December 2, 2004
Toledo football coach Tom Amstutz had a foul taste left in his mouth after a Nov. 2 loss at the hands of Miami-Ohio.
The Rockets lost 23-16 to the RedHawks and were handed their first MAC loss of the season.
At 6:30 p.m. today on ESPN, Amstutz and the Rockets will get a second chance when they take on the RedHawks in the MAC Championship Game at Ford Field in Detroit.
“After that first game, we had a funny taste in our mouth and we thought we could do better,” said Amstutz, whose team is a two-point underdog. “We’ve been given a unique opportunity and we’re looking forward to playing [Miami] again.”
A Motor City Bowl bid will be on the line for both teams this time. The bowl said it will take the winner to face UConn in the Dec. 26 bowl.
This time, both teams come into the game as champions of their respective divisions. Miami (8-3 overall, 7-1 MAC) beat Akron in its final regular season game to wrap up its second consecutive east division title. The RedHawks beat Bowling Green in the championship game last season.
“We’re excited to be a part of this for the second time in a row,” RedHawks coach Terry Hoeppner said. “We’re healthy and looking forward to the trip to Detroit.”
Toledo, which last won the title in 2001, won the West in similar fashion, recovering from a 20-point deficit to beat Bowling Green in the final regular season game. The win ended the hopes of a division championship for NIU.
For the first time, the game will be played at a neutral site. In the seven games before, homefield advantage would rotate between divisions.
