Starting spots still up in air

NIU will bring its entire 40-man roster to Stevens Point to compete individually in all 10 weight classes. An estimated 24 schools and 400 wrestlers will be represented.

NIU coach Dave Grant said he will determine his lineup for the rest of the season from results of the Nov. 4 NIU Wrestle-off, the Stevens Point Open and Michigan State Open.

Whichever wrestler places the best in two out of the three matches gets his shot at the starting lineup in his respective weight class and will earn a starting lineup spot Nov. 28 against Wisconsin.

“It’s a good opportunity to see where everyone’s at,” Grant said. “If someone lost at the Wrestle-off but they win [the Stevens Point Open], it will even up the score with the guy they’re competing against. Sam [Hiatt] and some other guys have won this before. It’s a good warm-up.”
