WDEK-FM expands on the airwaves

A newer, much wider variety of music comes to WDEK-FM (92.5) in DeKalb with the switch to the “Nine” format on Monday.
The Chicago-based Newsweb Corporation recently purchased three frequencies with plans to promote a format called the “Nine” FM on two of them, said Harvey Wells, vice president-group station manager.
“Nine” is a new idea where music from the ’70s to the present will play on one station, he said.
Newsweb considered acquiring more air time in the Chicagoland area after the new format became popular, he said.
Newsweb has been waiting for the Federal Communications Commission to approve the sale of WDEK, which cost $28 million, Wells said. Recently, the federal approval went through.
Christina Nelson, a first-year graduate student studying English, said she listens to pop stations during her commute.
Nelson said the new station might be a “good thing” and she will tune in to check out the format.
Carly Hill, a second-year graduate student studying English, said she did not listen to the former Spanish format, but she will listen to “Nine.”
WDEK had a dance music format before they were bought out by the Spanish Broadcasting System. The SBS sold the station to Newsweb, leaving one Spanish-speaking station, the popular Mexican outlet “La Ley”, on WLEY-FM (107.9).
