Raymond leads NIU to third place

Sophomore point guard Stephanie Raymond earned all-tournament honors as the NIU women’s basketball team took third place in the Hawkeye Challenge at Iowa City this weekend.
The Huskies (1-1) lost their first game of the season Friday in the first round to Missouri 61-68 but recovered in the consolation game with a 61-43 win Saturday over Southern Illinois.
After they built an 18-12 lead against Missouri (1-1), the Huskies defense allowed a 3-22 run to end the first half, putting them behind for good.
The closest the Huskies were able to get was a nine-point deficit after a lay up by sophomore Kristin Wiener.
Raymond hit a three pointer with one second remaining to give her 23 points to go along with eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Raymond then scored 20 points in the Huskies win over SIU (0-2) and also had five rebounds and seven steals.
“Stephanie had a tremendous tournament,” NIU coach Carol Hammerle said. “We knew when we recruited her that she had a chance to be an outstanding player, and she is living up to the expectations.”
A 12-0 run by the Huskies to start the game and a 17-2 run to begin the second half proved to be too much for the Salukis, who had just one bucket in the first 9:09 of the second half.
“One of our focuses this year is to win the first four minutes of each half,” Hammerle said. “We did a good job coming out with intensity, getting the momentum in our favor and making [SIU] pick up its game.”
NIU led by as many as 27 in the second half and never led by less than nine points.
Host Iowa beat Missouri 75-54 in the championship game.
