Benefit set for African orphans
November 9, 2004
The African Student Association will host a “Dance for Africa” show at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Carl Sandburg Auditorium in the Holmes Student Center. Proceeds will benefit orphans of AIDS victims in Africa.
The ASA is raising money to finish building an orphanage in Uganda that has been under construction for the past three years. The orphanage is for children who have lost their parents to AIDS.
“We are trying to find a way to help out the African community and provide shelter for kids without parents,” ASA President Mike Boateng said.
The building in Uganda is a work in progress and the organization is trying to raise as much money as possible for it, Boateng said.
The show will include refreshments, skits, poetry, comedy, dancing and singing. Doors will open at 7 p.m., with the show beginning at 7:30 p.m.
There will also be performances by 16 groups, including VIBE, Flawless, BMI, Mitchell Gadbsi Jazz All-Stars and Hip Hop Connxion.
“This is for a great cause – we want students to come out, have fun and meet new people, all while making a difference in other people’s lives,” said Zina Lawani, public relations officer for the ASA. “It is also a good way to learn more about African culture and better student AIDS awareness.”
Tickets cost $5 for students, $7 for non-students and $7 at the door for anyone. All proceeds of the show will be used for the completion of the orphanage in Africa. To purchase tickets in advance, students should call Mike Boateng at 753-5414 or Nina Lawani at 773-742-8824.
