Bull’s eye hits DeKalb industry
November 8, 2004
Groundbreaking begins today for the 1.6-million-square-foot Target warehouse and distribution center in DeKalb’s Park 88.
Target will use the warehouse to store products. Semitrailers will be able to pick up the products and ship them to different Target stores all over Illinois, DeKalb principal planner Russ Farnum said.
The groundbreaking ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Park 88 industrial park at Fairview Drive and Peace Road.
The building is expected to cost $100 million and DeKalb is spending $3.5 million on Macom Drive, a road curving around the center to connect Fairview Drive and Peace Road to help support the center’s shipping capabilities. Additional costs to connect the roads will be covered by the state and Illinois Department of Transportation, Farnum said.
Five hundred jobs will be available to start, but as time goes on, there could be as many as 1,000 new jobs available for area residents.
Ten percent of the new jobs will be at the executive level, paying at least $40,000 a year, according to city records. The remaining jobs will pay $28,000 to $30,000 a year.
“I definitely think this will help DeKalb’s economy [with] all the new jobs the site will provide,” Farnum said. “DeKalb should see a lot of money back from this.”
Target hopes to be done building the center and have the site fully functional by Sept. 1.
