Women get first victory
November 15, 2004
The team didn’t accomplish everything coach Carol Hammerle wanted, but the NIU women’s basketball team still got its first win of the preseason over NAIA school Saint Xavier.
Despite having their starting point guard Stephanie Raymond back for her first game of the year, the Huskies struggled to take care of the ball and committed 32 turnovers for the second straight game in the 76-42 victory Saturday.
“We talked about four goals we had before the game and minimizing turnovers was one,” Hammerle said. “We didn’t accomplish that goal and we need to do a much better job of taking care of the basketball.”
Freshman forward Nikita Odom played only 17 minutes but still led the Huskies with 18 points, all in the second half, on 9-of-10 shooting from the field. Odom also chipped in six rebounds and two steals.
“We had to attack in the second half,” Odom said. “We had to get the ball in the middle and that enabled me to do what I did.”
The SXU offense shot 25 percent for the game and wasn’t able to get anything going from the start.
A 2-1 lead in the first three minutes was the only lead they would see all night, and that turned into a 36-20 halftime deficit after a 10-0 run by the Huskies.
