Sorority homeless for a night

Sigma Lambda Sigma sorority raised $200 and gathered two carloads of food to donate to Hope Haven, 1145 Rushmoore Drive, Thursday night as part of its “Homeless for a Night” fundraiser.

Delta Chi and Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternities also helped with the fundraiser.

Members stood outside of Wal-Mart, 2300 Sycamore Road, through the cold and rain until 2 a.m. asking for money and food donations.

This was the second time the sorority members held the fundraiser and they hope to make it their philanthropy, said Stefanie Daker, philanthropy chair for Sigma Lambda Sigma.

The Sig Lambs believe their effort in braving the elements makes people more inclined to give back to their community, said Ausra Brooks, a senior physical education major and Sigma Lambda Sigma member.

The group spent most of the night exposed to the elements but set up two tents for warmth and shelter.

“To see what homeless people go through, it was important for us to be out there, and by taking away the shelter we normally have and only having tents, we hope it made people realize we were serious about raising money for Hope Haven,” Daker said.

The Sig Lambs are known for doing service projects and helping out the community, Daker said.

Other fundraisers they have organized include cleaning up highways, playing games with the elderly at Varsity Manor and babysitting children at Safe Passage, a local domestic violence center.

Each Sig Lamb is required to do 70 hours of service a year.

“We want to stay connected with the community and I think this differs us from the rest of the sororities,” Daker said.
