Mates of State: All Day (1 Star)

By Collin Quick

Flash back to 1988 for a second and turn on your classic Nintendo Entertainment System. Now take those repetitive high pitched frequencies set against The Legend of Zelda and add lyrics to the mix. How does that sound? Not too hot, right?

Mates of State combine MIDI-esque sounds with overbearing piano leads and water-downed lyrics on its four-track EP, “All Day.”

The duo of Jason Hammel and Kori Gardner comes off as though they are trying to recreate the sound of the Polyphonic Spree. But seeing as how these two don’t have 24 members backing up their musical efforts, the final product comes off as weak and overproduced.

The album has a rather somber mood and never goes beyond a high-hat or a bass line. Lyrics aren’t sung; they are more or less lightly screamed with very little emotion attached to them.

The EP closes out with a cover of David Bowie’s “Starman.” The duo tries to mimic Bowie’s vocals and replace his guitar lead with their overpowering piano.

Even Ziggy Stardust would want the 18 minutes back that he spent listening to this mishap.

Just be happy this EP doesn’t last all day.
