Group seeks donations for troops

Just Make It Happen will hold the final event of its We Care campaign in DeKalb County to send supplies to troops in Iraq. The “Duty Honor Country … We Remember You” patriotic show will begin at 7:30 p.m., with the lobby opening at 6:30 p.m. today at the Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second St.
“I tried to design this as personal, professional and inclusive,” said John Smith, the event’s organizer.
Raising money is not the main goal.
Rather, they concentrate on sending gifts, such as letters, videos and care packages. Smith urges all attendants to bring non-perishable goods for the care packages.
“Some of the most important things are from home. It’s lonely over there,” Smith said, adding that videos and letters make the troops happy because they feel like they know what is going on.
Advance tickets cost $20 and are $25 at the door. Many tickets are still available, he said.
We Care is a non-profit campaign that relies on its ticket sales to pay for production, entertainment and future events.
With the media concentrated on Iraq, he said it is important for people to realize that not all deployed troops are just in Iraq, but all over the world in places like Germany, the Philippines and Korea.
“Big band” music supplied by Shananigans will accompany letter-writing activities and a flag presentation. A howitzer cannon from the Sycamore armory will be displayed in the lobby. Attendees can also sign and attach pictures to a 24-foot wall of honor in the lobby.
Smith said the messages and care packages will likely reach the troops by Christmas.
