MAC title on the line

It all comes down to this: Bowling Green at Toledo, 6 p.m. today on ESPN2.

If Toledo (7-3, 6-1) wins, it will be MAC West champions. If Bowling Green (8-2, 6-1) is victorious, NIU will claim the division title.

The MAC West winner will face East Division champion Miami-Ohio on Dec. 2 in Detroit for the conference championship.

Toledo coach Tom Amstutz offered hope for the Huskies that his team may be a little tired for tonight’s game.

“You lose sleep at night watching them on film,” said Amstutz of Bowling Green, which is a 4-4 1/2-point favorite. “They’re a tremendous football team.”

The game figures to be an offensive fan’s dream, as both starting quarterbacks are among the top six passers in the nation. Bowling Green’s Omar Jacobs has thrown for 32 touchdowns versus just three interceptions. He leads an offense that averages 43.9 points per game, fourth-best in the country.

This is Jacobs’ first year as a starter.

“He’s a tremendous QB and he’s certainly exceeded our expectations,” said Bowling Green coach Gregg Brandon. “But he’d be the first to tell you it’s not all about Omar. It’s a complete team effort.”

Toledo signal caller Bruce Gradkowski is completing nearly 72 percent of his passes, second-best in the nation. The Rockets average 33.8 points per game and give up 29.7.

In addition to leading the MAC in scoring, Bowling Green is first in scoring defense, giving up a conference-low 19.8 points per game. Since a Sept. 24 loss to NIU, the Falcons have won seven games in a row.

“All you can do is ask for a final game for the championship,” Amstutz said. “But we have a very difficult game ahead of us. By no means are we there yet.”
