Big Bear gets artsy

By Erin Weinke

Peter Blumenstein, known as Big Bear to his friends, is a sweet-natured artist. His work is on display in Neptune Central’s Artist of the Month display case.

Originally from Bolingbrook, Ill., Blumenstein transferred from Joliet Junior College. Although he misses high school and the good old days, he thinks college has improved him greatly.

Blumenstein’s favorite medium is charcoal pastel.

“They are the best way to manipulate color and have it blend properly,” Blumenstein said.

His inspirations are music and anything else that can spark a creative fire. He listens to a wide variety of musical genres, including alternative, classical, rock ’n’ roll and even some Gregorian chants if his mood is right.

In his free time, Blumenstein enjoys having fun with his friends, making artwork and talking. He also enjoys playing video games such as Halo 2 and watching movies like “The Boondock Saints.“

Blumenstein considers his greatest artistic achievement to be resurrecting his tiger drawing from the brink of destruction. The drawing, which can be seen on display in Neptune Central, was torn by some faulty mesh and had to be carefully put together. Although Blumenstein’s teacher thought it could not be done, Peter found a way to make it work and the tear is virtually undetectable.

On a regular day, Blumenstein goes to classes, works on projects and tries to relax by watching a movie or spending time with his friends. He says he believes one of the best things to do in DeKalb is to shop or see a movie on Sycamore Road.

Art is something Blumenstein loves to do and hopes to continue throughout his life. His passion for his artwork can be seen in his pieces.

“I try to put myself into pieces,” Blumenstein said. “Whatever is affecting me, I try to put it in. It’s no great mystery, you just have to look for it.”
