Columnist can’t compare himself with Jesus Christ
November 9, 2004
“My writing is my opinion, but it also is the truth.” This about sums it up for the little guy, Willie Mickell. Our country has definitely displayed its division in the past few weeks on such issues as the war in Iraq, the economy and the future of our great nation. I support people’s diligence in holding the president responsible for his actions. However, I am writing the Northern Star in disgust over the arrogance and the ignorance displayed by Willie Mickell’s Monday column. How dare you write that you understand how Jesus Christ felt and compare your trivial column to the sufferings of my Lord and Savior. Despite your lack of compassion toward the lives of your fellow Americans, I will ask for your forgiveness and that you may someday open your eyes and see how insignificant we are here on earth. Mr. Mickell, I am very disappointed in you for allowing your politics to get in the way of your faith. Before anything is said about politics, I want that known.
Furthermore, no matter who is elected, you must realize your country elected him. No one man can send this great nation to “hell,” as you put it. If this nation continues to display the compassion, work ethic and faith that made it what it is today, no one can bring us down. Mr. Mickell displayed his lack of all three in his column. As an American, I would much rather have the war on terror fought in Iraq than here on our soil! While the lives lost have been truly regrettable, they will continue to be less substantial while the fight is on foreign soil. We are not fighting Iraqi terrorists in Iraq; we are fighting the world’s terrorists. I am tired of ignorant non-military youth underscoring the service of our generation by continually stating that their work has been a waste of American time and resources.
The path toward pessimism is always easier than the one that realizes the opportunities and benefits afforded oneself. As for you, Mr. Mickell, I hope you have the bravado to go out and make the difference you are calling for. However, I really doubt you will. As your column proves, you just don’t get it.
