Blaze guts RV

The Sycamore Fire Department is investigating a Tuesday morning fire that destroyed an RV in a Sycamore mobile home park.
No one was injured as the fire tore through the camper, which was unoccupied at the time.
The metal camper at the Evergreen Village Mobile Home Park, 955 E. State St., was engulfed in flames when firefighters and DeKalb County Sheriff’s police arrived just after 10 a.m., Sycamore fire Lt. Tal Hickey said.
“Fire had burned through the roof and flames were coming out of almost every window,” he said.
Firefighters doused the flames within minutes of arriving, Hickey said, but not before the camper sustained $18,000 in damages.
“Campers and mobile homes are pretty lightweight and tend to burn really quickly,” Hickey said.
Neighbor Lloyd Butler said Ted Snow, the camper’s owner, was on vacation visiting family in the South. Snow, his two dogs and another neighbor left on the road trip Friday.
Butler was on State Street when he saw smoke rising from the park.
He said he thought his home was on fire but quickly discovered it was Snow’s.
Two engines, an ambulance and a command vehicle responded.
Hickey said the department receives many calls from the park and that it is familiar with the area. Firefighters also spotted the fire’s smoke from State Street and had a good idea of the fire’s location.
Firefighters hosed down the end of the trailer near propane tanks and then attacked the west exposure of the camper to keep flames from a neighboring home, he said.
Once the flames were out, firefighters opened up hot spots inside the camper’s metal exterior with a ventilation saw, Hickey said.
“Basically, that thing was destroyed before we got there. Cutting it open wasn’t going to do any more damage,” he said.
Sheriff’s police left messages on Snow’s cell phone, but he had not returned calls to the police as of press time.
