Over the Fourth of July weekend, NIU Sports Information Director Mike Korcek recieved four citations in the 1992-93 national writing contest sponsored by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Korcek won District Five’s “Best in District” awards for a general feature story, an individual event preview and an individual event review.

District Five includes Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minesota, and Ontario and Manitoba Canada.

His preview, which appeared in the Oct. 3 edition of Huskie Illustrated, also took third nationally. It depicted coach Charlie Sadler reviewing four 1992 games through a virtual reality headset.

“It’s nice to be recognized.” says Korcek about his writings, which he considers being a side benifit of his job. “It’s a labor of love,” says Korcek.

Korcek has earned 12 CoSIDA writing awards in the last seven years.

Korcek said his main goal is to keep the reader in mind.

“We’re bombarded by so much information every day,” he said. “When you see my by-line, I always try to be interesting or entertaining.”

“It’s nice to be recognized. It’s a labor of love.”
