Struggles continue for NIU
October 3, 2004
The scoring drought continued for the NIU women’s soccer team this weekend.
The Huskies went without a goal for the second straight game and lost 3-0 to Central Michigan on Friday. NIU recovered with a 1-1 tie Sunday against Eastern Michigan.
“We’re struggling right now to play the way we did in the first seven or eight games of the season,” coach Frank Horvat said. “We’re not working through our bad moments right now.”
The Huskies, who managed just one shot on goal in the first half, threatened in the second half with four, but were never able to get on the board against CMU (6-4-2 overall, 4-1-2 MAC).
“For the second straight game, we didn’t show up to play in the first half,” Horvat said. “But we came out to play in the second half and need to build off today’s second half.”
The Huskies (4-3-4, 1-2-4) were outshot 21-6, while goalkeeper Carrie Dvorak had nine saves in the game. Junior midfielder Angeline Impelido led NIU with three shots on goal.
The game against the Eagles (6-3-3, 3-2-2) saw NIU’s first goal in two games with junior midfielder Becky Hott’s score in the 59th minute.
The Eagles scored the game-tying goal on a corner kick from Cyndi Mullins at the 84:31 mark.
Dvorak faced three shots in the overtimes and saved them all to help preserve the tie.
“We had a tremendous all-around effort today,” Horvat said. “Today, we went out there and competed. The past two games we have just gone out there and played, and that was the difference.”
