Huskies fall season finishes with praise from coach

The fall season for the NIU women’s golf team ended with high praise from coach Pam Tyska.

Led by sophomore Lisa Bailey, the Huskies captured their second victory of the season at the Huskie Classic.

“It’s been our best season in a decade,” said Tyska, who is currently competing in a long-drive competition in Nevada. “We are looking forward to our spring season, and we have a lot of things to celebrate.”

Bailey tied for first overall with her 13-over-par 170 at the season-ending event.

The fall season is just the first half for the team, which will resume its season in the spring.

“Everyone got better as our season went on, and our scores started to drop a lot,” said Bailey, who led the team with a 78.9 stroke average. “It was a great season, and we have improved a lot since last year.”

The Huskies’ first tournament victory came in the second event of the season at the Western Illinois invitational. Bailey received honors as low scorer for the tournament and was 10 strokes lower than her nearest NIU teammate.

“The Western tournament was the biggest of the season,” Bailey said. “It was our first time winning as a team and knowing we could do it was a big confidence-booster.”

They also tied for sixth place out of nine teams in the ISU Redbird Classic and came in seventh at the Iowa Hawkeye invitational.

The Huskies will train this winter for a spring schedule that spans geographically from Hawaii to West Virginia. The spring itinerary begins March 11 in Sebring, Fla. at the Eighth Annual Springlake Classic.
