Oral Roberts to visit NIU

By Sean Ostruszka

NIU volleyball coach Ray Gooden hopes that 7 p.m. today at Victor E. Court will be the right time.

Coming off two straight conference losses, the Huskies take on Oral Roberts, which has the Mid-Continent Conference’s offensive player of the week the past two weeks, Ori Zuzik.

In volleyball, everything is about timing and to get back on track NIU will have to start consistently putting everything together at the right times, Gooden said.

“We had it going there for a while when we won three straight, but then we just stopped,” Gooden said. “I’m just waiting for the right time for our team to come together. This would be a great ‘right time,’ though.”

That “right time” will be no easy task against ORU, which has won six straight and nine of its last 11.

On offense, ORU is led by Zuzik, who leads the conference in kills, averaging 5.12 a game.

NIU’s Kate McCullagh and Tera Lobdell have operated well lately, Gooden said. McCullagh received a MAC player of the week award for her consecutive 20-kill performances – a career first. And Lobdell has gone over 20 kills each of the past three matches.

But in order to end the Golden Eagles’ win streak, NIU must do more than rely on individuals, said Huskies freshman Amy Ward.
