Women’s soccer tries to bounce back with win
September 30, 2004
After starting the season with a seven-match unbeaten streak, the NIU women’s soccer team will try to bounce back from a two-game losing skid.
The Huskies (4-2-3 overall, 1-1-3 MAC) will be on the road for the second straight weekend when they travel to Central and Eastern Michigan for two MAC games.
“I think that we are better than what we showed last weekend,” coach Frank Horvat said of his team’s losses to Western Michigan and Southwest Missouri State. “This team still has a lot to prove and we are going to have to raise our game for the second half of the year.”
The Huskies begin their road trip at 3 p.m. today against CMU (4-4-2, 2-1-2). They will face the task of containing Jacquie Lacek, who is third in the MAC in scoring with 16 points.
“We are just going to have to force pressure and try to force mistakes,” Horvat said. “We’ve had pretty light training sessions this week. It’s just the mental things.”
NIU travels to Ypsilanti, Mich. to play EMU (6-2-2, 3-1-1) in a 1 p.m. Sunday game. The Eagles have won three of their last four games and are second in the MAC.
“We have really worked on shooting in practice,” freshman midfielder Beth Matus said. “We needed to get our confidence up and we are determined to get into the MAC championship.”
The Huskies have struggled to score goals lately, having netted three in their last four games. They are winless in those four games.
“All the girls are basically mad that we lost the games last weekend,” Horvat said. “We have not responded well in the past to losses and if we want to have success in October, then we need to be able to handle the transition.”
