Moore helping deliver NIU win, wife close to delivering baby girl
October 13, 2004
This Saturday’s Homecoming game with Central Michigan could be extra special for NIU defensive end Travis Moore.
The senior may have more than one homecoming, as his wife is due to have their first child on game day.
Moore, who’s not much of a baseball fan, took some time to chat with the Northern Star about marriage, kids and the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry.
Northern Star: How was the wedding, and were there a lot of people there?
Travis Moore: It was back home on the south side of Chicago. We had a good crowd of probably 300 guests. It was a nice-sized wedding of 22 people.
NS: Did anything strange or funny happen during the wedding?
TM: When we got through the ceremony, everybody turned around and my best man is completely dripping. It looked like he had just been out in the rain.
NS: Was he just nervous?
TM: He was nervous like he was getting married – that was the funny thing.
NS: Your wife is pregnant with your first child. When is the due date?
TM: She’s due Saturday, actually.
NS: Do you know if it’s a boy or a girl?
TM: Yeah, we know it’s going to be a girl.
NS: Do you guys have a named picked out?
TM: Yeah, Maya Marie Moore.
NS: What was it like playing down in Central Florida knowing that your wife could have a baby at any point?
TM: It was hard because I was so far away, and at the same time I had to concentrate on football. It was definitely a struggle.
NS: You’re the only one married on the team. Does anyone ever say stuff to you about it?
TM: Yeah. I get a lot of ‘married men can’t do this, married men can’t do that.’
NS: You seem to be a fashionable guy, but who on the team is the best dresser?
TM: We’ve got a lot of good dressers. We’ve got Sam Hurd, Kevin Woods, myself, Garrett Wolfe. We’ve got a lot of fashionable guys; you’d be surprised. We’ve got guys that like to look good and will take the time.
NS: If you could play for any current NFL coach, who would it be?
TM: Bill Parcells. I believe he’s a good coach and a hard-nosed coach. That’s the type of coach I like to play for. He’s real strict, and you know if you’re not the type of person he wants you to be, his system will make you what he wants.
NS: Are you a baseball fan at all?
TM: No, not really, but I like the Cubs’ jersey; I like the outfit.
NS: So you have no interest in the Yankees-Red Sox series?
TM: The only thing about it I like is Pedro [Martinez]. After the incident last year, I recognized who he was and I was like ‘Who is this guy and what is he doing pushing the old guy?’ That’s the only team I really know.
